Awareness and Training Programme on Herbal Medicine at Bosco Reach Out Agri – Training Centre, Joropara –Bajengdoba, Meghalaya.

This awarness camp was conducted by Vibgyor NE Foundation. During the training
programme, there were altogether 30 participants. Mr. Rackir R. Marak,
Principal of Indira Gandhi Memorial Secondary School, Bajengdoba, was the Chief
Guest for the occasion. He spoke on the practice of herbal medicine by our
forefathers and the need to preserve the practice. Others who were present and
spoke on the occasion are Mr. Prinit Sangma, Sordar from Chitchocheng village,
a mobilizer for DBTech, Mr. Masan D. Sangma, Trainer of Home Security Guards of
BRO-ATC, Joropara, Mr. Anthony Ronghang, Supervisor BRO – ATC and Ms. Beauritha
Marak, ISMO Trainer.

Fr. Joseph Teron sdb, was the resource person
on Herbal Medicine. At the inaugural function, he spoke on the practice of
herbal medicine as part of daily living. Then he spoke on the number of
diseases, curable by herbal medicines. During the sessions he taught the
participants on the causes of various  diseases and the herbal remedies
for the same, such as headache, fever, high bp, diabetes, scabies, blood
dysentery, flatulence, eye problems, cuts and wounds, bones setting, nerves and
tendons disorder, kidney stones problems, urinary infections, piles, burns,
liver diseases, indigestion, menstrual disorder, stomach ulcers, antidotes,
herbs for snake-bite, dog-bite, scorpion bites, etc. During the third session,
he took the participants to the Herbal Garden of the Centre and showed them a
wide variety of herbal medicinal plants, besides the samples taken to the
classroom. 

A Seminar on “Social Entrepreneurship: Promote Sustainable Economic Growth and Employment Amongst Local youths” was conducted by Vibgyor Media Solutions and supported by Vibgyor NE Foundation. The focus of this session was to explore opportunities for entrepreneuship development at micro, small and medium scale to promote sustainable development in the Northeast region.

A Technical Session on “Diversified Farming with Medicinal Plants in Northeast India – Markets Within and Abroad” was conducted during the Summit with support from Vibgyor NE Foundation.

This session brought together relevant stakeholders, ranging from producers and sellers of value added medicinal plants to government agencies, who act as market regulators, to deliberate on this subject. Shri B.S. Rawat, then Director General, North East Centre for Technology Application and Research (NECTAR) introduced the theme and objectives of the session. Moderator for the session, Shri A.M. Singh, PCCF & HoFF, Department of Environment & Forests, Assam, highlighted the untapped potential of medicinal plants in the Northeast region and noted that the key aspects to focus on was the availability and sustainability of medicinal plant, trade of medicinal plant products and certification & regulations required for this industry. Following this, a dynamic discussion was held on the potential of creating high value products from medicinal plants in Northeast India, the value chain development and financing/regulatory mechanisms required to support such entrepreneurial ventures.

Dr. S.K. Malhotra, Commissioner, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare highlighted the various initiatives being undertaken by the Government of India in supporting sustainable production of medicinal plant products.

Shri R.S. Gill, then CEO, Meghalaya State Medicinal Plant Board and Additional PCCF, Forests & Environment Department, Meghalaya noted that there is vast amount of traditional knowledge available but most of it remains undocumented.

International delegates Shri Tendril Wangdi, Dean, Institute of Traditional Medicine Services from Bhutan and Shri A.K.M. Haruner Rashid, Registrar/Secretary, Bangladesh Board of Unani & Ayurvedic Systems of Medicine highlighted the benefits of medicinal plant products and the measures being taken by their governments to support sustainable cultivation. Shri C.P. Suresh, Head, Horticulture, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), shared the work being done by his university on preserving the indigenous knowledge on medicinal plants in Garo Hills, Meghalaya.

Vibgyor N.E. Foundation organized a music event, as part of the Northeast Green Summit, towards promotion of bamboo in the field of music through a nature inspired cultural concert held by the famous Vayali Folklore Group, a bamboo band from Kerala.
